"independent clause" is a correct and commonly used term in written English
It refers to a complete sentence that can stand alone and express a complete thought, without requiring additional information or being connected to another clause. It must contain both a subject and a verb. Example: "I went to the store." This is an independent clause because it has a subject (I) and a verb (went) and can stand alone as a complete sentence. "You can go whenever you want" is another example of an independent clause. It can be used in written English in various contexts, such as when discussing sentence structure or explaining grammar rules. It can also be used in everyday writing, such as in a formal essay or in a business report, when constructing complex sentences.
