It is often used to indicate that the speaker is reporting information they have been told by someone else. It can also be used to express a belief that is based on what others have told the speaker. Example: I'm told that the new restaurant in town is amazing. (This means that someone has told the speaker about the restaurant and they believe it to be true.) Another example: I'm told that the meeting has been rescheduled for next week. (This means that someone has communicated to the speaker that the meeting has been changed to a different date.)
