Hippo Regius later became a centre of Christian thought, housing the Council of Hippo (393 ce) and forming the bishopric of St. Augustine (396 430).
It passed to the Romans as Hippo Regius, was the residence of the Numidian kings, and achieved independence after the Punic Wars (264 146 bce).
Hippo, also called Hippo Regius, ancient port on the coast of North Africa, located near the modern town of Annaba (formerly Bône) in Algeria.
