Higher mattress endotoxin levels were associated with the presence of mice, cats, ETS, home crowding, and winter season while lower mattress endotoxin levels were associated with air conditioning, farm or acreage dwelling, and older age (Table 2).
However, among children aged 12 years and younger, controls had higher mattress endotoxin load (p = 0.002) than cases with a similar trend seen for mattress endotoxin concentration, although this was not statistically significant (p = 0.10; Figure 1).
In contrast, among children 12 years and older with a personal history of allergic disease, there was a suggestion of increased risk of asthma or wheeze with higher mattress endotoxin load.
Higher mattress endotoxin was associated with a reduced risk of asthma/wheeze but the effect was greatest among children 12 years and younger and without a personal history of allergic disease.
Apart from that, another previous ECRHS study among the same study population demonstrated that the presence of dogs and cats within the home environment was significantly associated with higher mattress dust concentrations of endotoxin, a bacterial lipopolysaccharide (LPS) which can be found in the outer membrane of gram-negative bacteria [ 7].
Make the bed in the following order: place the high quality mattress cover closest to the mattress, then the first cheap set of sheets, first cheap mattress cover, second cheap set of sheets, third and final mattress cover, with the decorative sheets on top of everything.
Test more expensive mattresses first, to experience what a high quality mattress feels like.
Invest in a high quality mattress and pillows.
