The false killer whale (Pseudorca crassidens), pygmy killer whale (Feresa attenuata), Risso's dolphin (Grampus griseus), and pilot whales (Globicephala species) have been thought to be relatives of the killer whale.
This study aims to describe the macroscopic, microscopic, biochemical and biomechanical features of the TMJ of two species of the suborder Odontoceti: the harbour porpoise (Phocoena phocoena) and Risso's dolphin (Grampus griseus).
Targeted species include dusky dolphins (Lagenorhynchus obscurus), Risso's dolphins (Grampus griseus), bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops ssp ., Humpback dolphins (Sousa ssp ., harbour porpoises (Phocoena phocoena), and Dall's porpoises (Phocoenoides dalli).
Genomic DNA from Sperm whale (Physeter macrocephalus), common (Delphinus capensis) and Rissos dolphin (Grampus griseus) was prepared from autopsy tissue obtained from animals stranded on the Scottish coast.
Of these 90 samples, 51 were from bottlenose dolphins (10 males and 41 females), 16 were from pacific white-sided dolphins (Lagenorhynchus obliquidens; 14 males and 2 females), 19 were from Risso's dolphins (Grampus griseus; 17 males and 2 females), and 4 were from false killer whales (Pseudorca crassidens; 1 male and 3 females).
No hearing loss was found in stranded Rissos's dolphins (Grampus griseus) from three different stranding events, two pygmy killer whales (Feresa attenuata) from a single stranding event, an Atlantic spotted dolphin (Stenella frontalis), and a spinner dolphin (Stenella longirostris; Table 1).
