It means to calculate or figure out a problem using mathematical methods or a computer. You can use 'Compute' when describing a task or process that requires mathematical calculations or when discussing data analysis and processing using a computer. Although it is often said that modern computers can compute anything (i.e., any function of natural numbers, or equivalently, any function of strings of letters from a finite alphabet), this is incorrect.
