The dye-stained patterns revealed a high proportion of non-equilibrium flow through vertically orientated macropores and a less permeable soil matrix at the grassland site.
The surrounding, non-grassland landscape likely has a strong influence on the bee species collected at the grassland sites, as some bees may be foraging in the grasslands but nesting elsewhere.
At around 3 m (the most typical water table depth under the forest sites), the soil contains more salt (diff. 600 us/cm for oak, 1100 us/cm for poplar) at forest sites than at the grassland.
The resulting annual net recharge (gross recharge minus ETg) at the pine plantation was comparable to that of the banksia woodland but only half of the corresponding value at the grassland.
The responses of soil moisture at the grassland and meadow sites to rainfall event size were similar, although total rainfall, the frequency of large rainfall events, and the vegetation types were different.
