The 17 samples resulted in a total sample of n = 74,868 4th grade students from 2704 schools.
The number of 4th grade students (8 – 10 year) was 505; 6th grade students (10 – 12 years) 462; 8th grade students (12 – 14 years) 492 and 10th grade students (14 – 16 years), 538.
Relatively low internal consistency (Cronbachs alpha) were reported by the 4th grade students (9 – 10 years) on the subscales; emotional well-being (0.52); friends (0.49) and school (0.47) but fairly acceptable reliability on the others; (total scale (0.83); physical well-being (0.66); family (0.62) and self-esteem (0.68).
In particular, the location and corresponding level of physical activity of 4th grade students (n = 134) was recorded using paired global positioning system (GPS) receivers and accelerometers over 33 days for each student.
A Flesch reading ease of 84.1 and a Flesch-Kincaid grade level of 3.8 were achieved suggesting that most 4th grade students would be capable of reading the booklet.
