In line with these assumptions, Jackson and Schuler (1999, p. 6) formulated two assertions of the institutional theory: (1) "institutionalized activities are resistant to change" and (2) "organizations in institutionalized environments are pressured to become similar".
A total of 107 institutionalized elderly individuals were interviewed.

Results revealed no significant intergroup differences in mean GDS scores at follow-up (day care, 3.85±0.89; institutionalized, 3.83±1.23).
Again, both groups showed comparable global cognitive impairment at follow-up (day-care: 17.20±5.63, range 5 28; institutionalized: 17.52±6.40, range 9 30).
For both community-dwelling and institutionalized populations the association between SRGH and lived health scores (community dwelling: rS = 0.33, institutionalized: rS = 0.36) was higher than the association between SRGH and biological health scores (community dwelling: rS = 0.23, institutionalized: rS = 0.30).
Of the 23 institutionalized patients, 13.0% had no formal education, and 87.0% had primary to university education.
The study population consisted of 760 institutionalized elderly individuals, distributed as follows: 254 (33.4%) in Rio de Janeiro, 193 (25.4%) in Juiz de Fora, 153 (20.1%) in Campo Grande and 160 (21.1%) in Cuiabá.
