Fecal samples were collected in October 2009 and from November 2010 to March 2011 from 334 healthy food-producing animals at slaughter in Switzerland: 59 pigs (57 fattening pigs, 2 piglets), 124 cattle (63 calves, 26 young cows, 18 fattening bulls, 10 cows and 7 bullocks) and 58 sheep (40 lambs, 18 sheep older than one year).
Stereotypies, social interactions, and productive performance parameters were observed by continuous sampling on days 1, 7, 14, 21, and 28 of fattening.
Each room had 32 fattening pigs.
For this purpose, 10 faecal samples were collected from 10 different pens containing pigs close to market weight in a total of 232 fattening units.
Twenty-four weanling barrows (13.3 ± 0.8 BW, stage 1), 24 growing barrows (31.6 ± 1.5 BW, stage 2), 24 finishing barrows (56.7 ± 1.8 BW, stage 3) and 24 fattening barrows (111 ± 3.8 BW, stage 4) were individually housed in metabolic crates and allotted to 1 of 4 diets with 6 pigs fed each diet at each BW in a completely randomized design.

In the Netherlands, about 7.5 × 106 fattening pigs are raised annually [ 18].
The average herd sizes were: 70 dairy cows, 17 beef cows, 186 sows, 765 fattening pigs and 32 adult sheep.
To obtain nasal swab and blood samples for testing, we randomly selected 390 fattening pigs (25 27 weeks old) at the slaughterhouse; the pigs originated from 45 farms.
The experiment was carried out on 360 fattening pigs (27 112 kg live weight), weighed and assigned to pens stratified by weight and sex.
