The percentage of tumour cells showing E-cadherin expression at cell-cell contacts was estimated and the intensity of staining was compared with the staining of normal epithelia such as the epidermis and normal mammary ducts (1: weaker than normal structures, 2: staining intensity similar to normal structures, 3: stronger than normal structures).
