Of the 21 ineligible patients, 16 did not meet the criteria (Barrett's oesophagus: 6, oesophagitis grade C: 2, oesophageal stricture: 1, peptic ulcer disease: 3, possible cancer: 1).

Thirty-three patients of the original cohort of 166 BO patients were excluded for the following reasons: presence of HGD at baseline (n=2), death within 2 years of BO diagnosis (n=19), oesophagectomy without HGD/OAC (n=1, stricture misclassified as cancer) and loss to follow-up (n=11).
Others, such as the occurrence of deep ulceration, 104 106 fistulation, 107 stricture formation, 104 108 109 bleeding, 105 106 110 perforation 105 and severe sometimes chronic pain, 110 112 reflect the risk of any thermal therapy in chronically ischaemic tissues.
In a series of 81 patients treated for curative intent, overall complication rate was 21% and included bleeding (7%), stricture (6%), urinary retention (2.6%), electrical burns (2.6%), perianal abscess (0.9%), and perforation (0.9%).
Benign prostatic hyperplasia/obstruction was identified in 73, urinary calculi in 30, prostatitis in 7, urinary tract infection in 36, urethral stricture in 10, nephrological disease in 6 and other benign diagnoses in 15 men.
The most common greater than or equal to grade 3 acute and late effects were dysphagia (63.0%, 17 of 27 patients) and laryngeal stricture (18.5%, 5 of 27 patients), respectively.
