The film originally ran for 12 hours 40 minutes, but was cut down to around a third of that length as Out 1: Spectre (1973).
Soon thereafter the restless auteur set to work on a slightly more viable edit of the project, and in 1974 he distilled it into the four and a half brain-boggling hours of "Out 1: Spectre".
Mr. Rivette went back to the footage and re-cut it to make "Out 1: Spectre," which is like a silent serial melodrama by Fritz Lang or Louis Feuillade remade by the most brilliant acting students of 1970.
"Touch me not" was Rivette's way of saying this 775-minute version in eight 90- to 100-minute episodes, was the true version, and Out 1: Spectre, the pusillanimous cut – a mere four hours and 13 minutes – at the behest of distributors was just a ghost of the full frontal experience.
In six years he made the four films that will determine his place in film history, and which may all deserve the label "masterpiece": "L'Amour Fou" (1968; 252 minutes); "Out 1: Noli Me Tangere" ("Don't Touch Me," 1970; 12 hours, 40 minutes); "Out 1: Spectre" ("Spectre One," 1972; 260 minutes); "Céline et Julie Vont en Bateau" ("Celine and Julie Go Boating," 1974; 193 minutes).
