There is no naturally occurring waxy wheat variety but in bread wheat there are waxy loci in each of its three different genomes, A, B and D. The waxy locus encodes starch granule protein 1 (SGP-1).
Both the Mr 180,000 and 150,000 sgps are deposited in the detergent-insoluble matrix of cultured cells, but they do not apparently undergo any disulphide-dependent intermolecular interactions and are not precursors or products of each other.
Therefore, hnd-1 SGPs express reporters typical of SGPs and hmcs at the L1 larval stage.
Based on this new evidence, we propose that hnd-1 SGPs fail to determine or maintain their fate and, as a result, they sometimes adopt a mixed SGP/hmc fate.
Correction for the total number of SGPs relative to the number of retinome genes positioned on average 21.1 (median 19.9) SGPs per window compared to 21.3 (median 15.0) retinal genes per window.
For each simulation, the compositional space was sampled by performing 600,000 SGPs based on 30,000 parent assemblies, as detailed: 10,000 parent assemblies were generated at random, each by randomly picking a molecular type and adding a random count of this type until the assembly size reaches Nmax.
In many instances, this results in a significant reduction of genes in the respective intervals offering a manageable number of candidates for retinal diseases (e.g. the RP29 locus contains 28 SGPs of which 5 are present in the reference retinome including GPM6A, WDR17, FLJ22649, VEGFC, AGA).
Moreover, the intensity of SGP-3, and to a lesser extent SGP-2, SGP-1 and waxy was higher in the transgenic lines.
