It was showed that plant densities of 51 000 and 87 000 plants ha−1 increased lint yield by 61.3 and 65.3% in 2012 and 17.8 and 15.5% in 2013 relative to low plant density (15 000 plants ha−1), however, no significant difference was observed between 51 000 and 87 000 plants ha−1.
Observed average yields for rainfed cotton in the four target states ranged from 300 kg ha−1 to 1200 kg ha−1 lint cotton with yields in a few districts of AP and KA exceeding 1200 kg ha−1 [35].
Multiple regression of yield on rainfall and dd indicates that only rainfall was a significant predictor of yield at Yavatmal that averaged 521kg lint cotton ha−1 (SD = +212.1) (Fig. 4b; Eq. 1).
By dissecting the QTLs based on their function for fiber development, the Dt subgenome contained 112 lint fiber-related QTL vs. 84 in the At.
In plants, the concept of meta-analysis has been applied to the analysis of QTL/genes for blast resistance [ 12], root traits and drought tolerance in rice [ 9, 10], lint fiber length in cotton [ 13], cyst nematode resistance in soybean [ 14], fusarium head blight resistance in wheat [ 15], flowering time [ 16], drought tolerance in maize [ 17], and disease resistance in cocoa [ 18].
Yield stagnation occurred nationally during the period 2005 to 2013 at about ~510-kg lint cotton ha−1 [2, 75] (see Additional file 1: Table S1).
In the absence of pest damage, average simulated rainfed yields for AP, GJ, KA, and MH accord with these values (Fig. 8a) with roughly half of the area producing less than 500-kg lint cotton ha−1 (Fig. 8b).
Suicides in GJ were about 500 per year (<3 % of the national total), while cotton production was 24 39 % of the national total [37], and average yields were mostly >500-kg lint cotton ha−1 with CV <50%% (Fig. 7b).

Earlier studies on meta-analysis of QTL for root traits [ 9, 10] and blast resistance in rice [ 12], fusarium head blight resistance in wheat [ 15], flowering time in maize [ 16], nematode resistance in soybean [ 14], and lint fiber length in cotton [ 13] identified precise and concise meta-QTL.
