Plant biomass 13C signature was measured by carbon isotope analysis (precision of 0.1‰): combustion in an elemental analyzer (EA1110 CHN, Carlo Erba) coupled via a Conflo II interface to an isotope ratio mass spectrometer (Delta S, Finnigan MAT).
Elemental analyses were performed with a LECO-183 CHN analyzer.
