A typical limb has five digits (fingers or toes), which contain the phalanges.
The first metatarsal (which adjoins the phalanges of the big toe) is enlarged and strengthened for its weight-bearing function in standing and walking on two feet.
In some species, however, the phalanges are more numerous, as when the limb is modified to form a paddle (e.g., in whales).
In bats the phalanges of digits two to five, and other arm bones, are elongated and support a fleshy wing; the thumb is short and free and carries a claw.
This should make watching long stories less exhausting on the phalanges.
