As Bertel Haarder, Denmark's immigration minister, points out, there may be a connection between addiction to welfarism and hostility to immigrants.
The culture minister, Bertel Haarder is in the process of establishing a "cultural canon" for Denmark, inviting Danes to submit ideas about what they find most valuable in their national life.
But Haarder himself has sounded a note of caution about placing hygge in such a list – it should be done "only if it is something that includes rather than, as is often the case, excludes.

He compared the subject's cultural importance to that of H.C. Andersen and Karen Blixen (Klingsey, 2005) and claimed that Danes are 'bound together by a common history which has led us to where we are now, and by a common culture which the church and Christianity has a big part in' (Haarder, 2008).
Parliament firmly rejects abuses of fundamental freedoms throughout Europe, as the Haarder report emphasises.
